Wooded Whisky Tasting March 2015

Macallan Amber No Age 40% Abv

Aged exclusively in sherry casks.  It starts sweet with toffee and honey notes. Cereal and heather characteristics start to develop after some time. “Apologetic about not quite being a whisky”. Perhaps traditional whisky flavours masked by all the sherry sweetness. Score: 4.8

Auchentoshan Three Wood No Age 43%

First aged in bourbon casks this whisky is then finished in 2 different sherry casks. Dark colour indicates how prevalent wood characteristics are in this whisky, making for a unusual yet smooth dram. Oak and dry spices mingle with softer caramel and toffee notes.  Score: 7.7

Laphroaig Triple wood No Age(48%abv)

After ageing in bourbon casks this whiskey spends some time in small quarter casks, increasing the contact with the barrel. It is then blended and finished in large sherry butts adding sweetness and fruit notes. Orange leads you into the familiar saltiness on the nose, the finish is more smoke than heavy peat. Overall lighter and more balanced than classic Laphroaig, “A velvet glove over the sledgehammer”. Score: 9
