Whisky Tasting January 2015

Brave New World India & New Zealand

Amrut no age (46%abv)

Made from barley grown in the foothills of the Himalayas this Indian whiskey is distilled and matured in Bangalore which has an elevation of ~3000ft to somewhat offset its tropical latitude. The significantly higher temperature (than Scotland etc.) and associated increase in maturation speed may explain why this is bottled with  no age statment and while we’ll probably never see anything over 10-12 years from Amrut.

It starts with a rough short nose that softens to give a hint of charcoal the taste is is simple with a suggestion of chocolate and dry spices. possibly suggesting that while the the exchange between liquor and oak is rapid some of the more subtle notes do not get the time to integrate. Surprisingly pleasant warming feel from the high ABV. Would definitely enjoy a dram or two in the Himalayas. Score: 6.3

Amrut Fusion no age (50% abv)

This whiskey is made with the addition of some peated Scottish malt. Still no age statement  but this whiskey certainly shows more subtleties. The addition of  some fruits notes, possibly apple add to the smell. While Homey and caramel add some silkiness to the palate. It is still short but pleasant, and goes well with the addition of a little water. Score: 7.0

New Zealand Doublewood 15 yo (40%abv)

Made from barrels purchased several years after the original Dunedin distillery closed down, extra age and character has been added to this whisky by a second ageing spent in ex wine french oak barrels. This adds an intriguing touch, the whiskey smells like a mixture of Rum and Brandy. The taste is quite sweet and some fruity red wine characteristics show through. Enjoyable but simply not whisky to some members, enjoyable perhaps if approached as a liqueur rather than a liquor. Score 5.5

New Zealand  21 yo (43%abv)

“Smells like whiskey!” was the first comment when this dram was poured. This 21 yo from the is unadulterated blended from the original casks of whisky left when the Dunedin distillery closed. It smells of Apricots and sweet citrus like mandarin. The taste is wonderfully complex at once herbaceous and creamy and it reall y does linger on the tongue for an overall wonderful experience. Score: 7.7

Next meeting will be Wednesday the 25th Feb 6.30 pm at Tank bar and dining32 Turbot St, Brisbane
