Whisky Tasting September 2015

Hello all,

The September 2015 meeting of the GCMWS was held at Tank Bar and Restaurant 32 Turbot Street on Wednesday 30th.  We had a gathering of 7 members and guests and savoured some fine whiskies.september people01

We started with the Auchentoshan 3 wood, unaged, triple distilled single malt at 43% into American bourbon oak and finished via oloroso sherry casks and then into Pedro Ximenez sherry casks. This imparts a hazelnut, lemonny, cinnamon and butterscotch flavours.  Personally I got the hints of cinnamon only, maybe that’s just me.

september people 2The followup was the Connemara Peated single malt, unusually for an Irish whiskey this was only double distilled and a combination of young and older whiskey so was unaged.  This combination resulted in fruit flavours, vanilla tones and a full bodied peat presented at 40%.  We had this a few months ago and in other company the peat was not a present as this time.

whisky twiceWe finished with the Jameson Select Reserve, a single distillery with a  rich pot stilled whiskey combined with  sweet small batched grain whiskey.  All this is matured in flame charred barrels to produce a rich luxurious taste.  This is a triple distilled Irish at 40%.

The meeting consensus of the meeting rated the Connemara just in front of the Auchentoshan with the Jameson way behind.  I believe the subtle taste of the blended Jameson did a disservice to the whiskey as some expressed it was not what they expected from Jamesons.

Well that’s all for September 2015.  We look forward to October 28th for the next gathering.  More information later
